When drinking alcohol turns into a hobby, it can be really hard to stop. But it is not impossible. You just need determination and of course, a plan.
If you can afford to get help from a professional, go for it.
But for me, I managed to quit with the support of my family.
I was diagnosed with fatty liver, so I had to take medicine and avoid things that could make my liver worse. Thankfully, the liver can heal and grow back as long as the condition is not too serious.
I never told my doctor about my nightly drinking habit, but during our talks, he explained what to avoid to protect my liver. These include alcohol, fatty foods, overeating, and not having enough exercise.
Instead of stopping all at once, I slowly reduced my alcohol intake.
First, I skipped a day between drinks.
Then I only drank twice a week.
Later, I went down to once a week.
It was not an easy journey and I had some slip ups, but I always tried to get back on track.
The hardest part for me was falling asleep without drinking. Sometimes even after midnight, my mind was still awake and full of thoughts.
So I started eating foods that are rich in melatonin, L theanine, and glycine. Based on my research, these nutrients help support deep and peaceful sleep. I also tried natural health supplements, though it is still better to get these nutrients from real food when you can.
What also helped me was relaxing before bed and avoiding gadgets before sleeping. Giving myself quiet time really made a difference.
